Nunnery

The floods are roused, and will not soon be weary;
Down from the Pennine Alps how fiercely sweeps
CROGLIN, the stately Eden’s tributary!
He raves, or through some moody passage creeps
Plotting new mischief – out again he leaps
Into broad light, and sends, through regions airy,
That voice which soothed the Nuns while on the steeps
They knelt in prayer, or sang the blissful Mary.
That union ceased: then, cleaving easy walks
Through crags, and smoothing paths beset with danger,
Came studious Taste; and many a pensive stranger
Dreams on the banks, and to the river talks.
What change shall happen next to Nunnery Dell?
Canal, and Viaduct, and Railway, tell!

Nonnenkloster

Einmal erweckt, das Wasser strömt ohn’ Überdruß
und reißend stürzt es von den Hängen des Pennin
als CROGLIN, unsrer stolzen Eden Nebenfluß.
Er wütet oder kriecht durch düstren Durchlaß hin,
als plant’ er Unheil neu – hinaus auf schnellem Fuß
er springt ins Licht: Seit je hier in den Lüften hing
sein Rauschen, das den Nonnen friedevoller Gruß,
wenn kniend dort am Hang die Messe man beging.
Die Harmonie zerfiel. Nach Jahren kam auf schönem Weg
durch Klippen und auf sanftem Pfad mit Blick auf die Gefahr
Student und Maler; manchmal träumt an seinen Ufern gar
ein Fremder, der nachdenklich fragend an dem Flusse steht:
Was widerfährt als nächstes wohl dem Nonnenklostertal?
Ist es ein Viadukt mit Eisenbahn, ist’s ein Kanal?

During a Tour, in the Summer of 1833, p. 1835
Fenwick Note (1843): 'I became acquainted with the walks of Nunnery when
a boy - they are within easy reach of a day's pleasant excursion from
town of Penrith where I used to pass my summer holidays under the
roof of my maternal grandfather. The place is well worth visiting tho'
within these few years its privacy, & therefore the pleasure which the
scene is so well fitted to give, has been injuriously affected by walks cut
in the rocks on that side the stream which had been left in its natural state.'
'At Corby, a few miles below Nunnery, the Eden is crossed by a magnificent
viaduct; and another of these works is thrown over a deep glen or ravine a
very short distance from the main stream.'

Nunnery / Nunnery Walks (ohne sichtbare Reste eines Klosters) liegt ca. 15 km
NNO von Penrith bei Kirkoswald. Die Bahnlinie Appleby-Carlisle verläuft hier in
Einschnitten mehr oder weniger versteckt auf der anderen, der westlichen Seite
des Eden, d.h. die östliche Seite des Flußufers mit der Einmündung des Croglin
blieb bis auf die Anlage von Wegen zum Wasserfall vom Eisenbahnbau verschont.
